Nigeria Real Estate Dictionary Definition: Define Tenement House - Definition of Tenement House
A tenement house is a house that is made up of single room apartments with all the tenants or group of tenants sharing common areas like kitchen, bathroom, and toilet.
For example, a 12 room tenement house may have . . .
two bathrooms
two kitchen and
two toilets
In this particular case, the tenants occupying six rooms share one bathroom, toilet, and kitchen.
However, in some cases, a ten room house may have only . . .
one bathroom
one kitchen and
one toilets
Considering that each room may be occupied by as many as four or five people (example, family of four or five), you can imagine the "hell" these folks go through each day, especially in the mornings when everyone is in a rush to go to work, school, or business.
A common feature of tenement house is that they are often arranged in two rows with each row facing each other. And coupled with the fact that all tenants share same amenities, the average tenant cannot help but get into one sort of conflict or another with other tenants.
That is why people living in tenement houses are often said to live in "face me I slap you" house . . . houses with high potential for conflicts and fights.
